- These stone benches formerly served porters for resting (16th to 19th centuries)
- Back then, heavy loads were transported across the countryside using back carriers or baskets, often carried on the heads of servants, maids, peddlers, etc.
- The elevated design allowed porters to easily retrieve their goods after resting
These "benches" can still be found sporadically in southern Germany
