The approximately 19-hectare nature reserve "Altarm der Schwentine" in the district of Plön, just outside the city of Kiel, was placed under protection in 1984. It serves to preserve the Schwentine valley between Rastorfer and Oppendorfer Mühle as a habitat for a partially endangered flora and fauna. In addition to the near-natural water sections of the Schwentine, its old arm and a tributary, the nature reserve includes herbaceous low and medium forest areas, small water bodies, bends and grassland areas.
