The exact origin of the rather unusual toponym Africa is not clearly established. A local legend as well as some authors think that it refers to an auxiliary body of the Roman legions, made up of African troops, which would have been stationed in this place. Indeed, there are at the top of the mountain the remains of an ancient camp. Many guesses, but the mystery remains.
