The pyramid-shaped colored sandstone monument commemorates the Elector of Mainz and Archbishop Friedrich Karl Josef von Erthal (1719 - 1802). In good weather you can see the Ohm Mountains and parts of the Harz on the horizon.A direct descent to the “Iberghaus” is possible on the steep path (approx. 300 m, some with steps).

From Kurfürstenstein you have a wonderful view over a part of the city Heilbad Heiligenstadt. The Mainz Elector and Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joesf von Erthal stayed here on 03.07.1777 and enjoyed the view of the city. Right next to the monument are found meridian stones, which were set in 1803 on the occasion of the survey of Eichsfeld.
