Although Dieter Kränzlein's works are mostly untitled, the viewer is tempted to make a decision: with this sculpture at SCULPTOURA, one quickly comes to the conclusion that it is a cushion resting on a pedestal - associations such as rest cushions could follow just as easily as parade cushions: the one guided by its placement on a cycle or hiking path, the other evoked by the value suggested by the sculptural treatment. Such concrete attributions are certainly possible in Kränzlein's work. But just as the imagined or claimed perception is not actually fulfilled here, the cushion is also not secure: as an invitation to pause, it seems too brittle and hard, and there is no reference in nature for a ceremonial context. The common denominator of all the artist's works is the processing of the shell limestone, which Kränzlein uses a saw to create a typical "hatching". The stone is thereby shown in its vulnerability and also exposed to an impressionistic dissolution of form. In the case of the supposed pillow, this leads to a softening of the volume, which also makes the surface appear softer, similar to how the aforementioned crucifixion experiences a transcendence through this surface treatment. But it remains the case that Dieter Kränzlein gives the shell limestone a magically diverse and new life in art and in nature.
