El Cau (the Cave) is an open-air museum in an old quarry in the El Ferriol countryside near Elche. The brittle sandstone, used centuries ago for the construction of various buildings in Elche, served to form and record numerous images and representative figures of the city of Elche. The creator of El Cau was Mariano Ros from Elche, who died in 2017 at the age of 91. He began sculpting when he retired and, together with some colleagues, made reliefs, sculptures and engravings from 2000 - 2008.
