The Calais lighthouse, erected in 1848, stands proudly on the banks of the English Channel. With its 271 steps, it offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the port of Calais, the city and, on a clear day, the English coast. The Phare de Calais was originally built in 1848 and designed by the architect Léonce Reynaud. In 1883 it was electrified, and in 1987 it was automated. Although there are no longer any physical lighthouse keepers, technicians from the Phares et Balises still ensure the proper functioning of the lighthouse. This lighthouse replaced the Tour du Guet from the 13th century.
