Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve is named after a cave that lies under Carreg Cadno's northern slopes. Translating as the Cave of the Black Spring, this is the deepest cave in the United Kingdom, reaching 901 feet (274.5 m) under the surface.
The nature reserve itself is a wild-feeling moorland landscape with many rocky outcrops. It enjoys splendid views of the region's peaceful countryside.
The reserve protects the wildlife that thrives in this unique environment. Bats and moths populate the caves, while above ground peregrines and red kites hunt in the sky. Early summer is a majestic time to explore here, when flowers like mountain everlasting, autumn gentian, mossy saxifrage and great burnet show off their colours.
