Erected in 1680 as a summer palace for the Albertines, from 1730 it was used to store parts of the royal art collections. Badly destroyed in air raids in 1945. Today the facade has been completely restored, but the interior of the building has not yet been completely restored.

The palace is considered to be the first significant secular building in Saxony to be built after the Thirty Years War. It is also one of the earliest baroque buildings in German-speaking countries and is one of the most important buildings in Dresden in terms of art and culture.
