The Kempen-Venlo railway line was planned between 1864 and 1866 on the basis of a contract between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Prussia, built from 1866 by the Rhenish Railway Company in Cologne and put into operation on January 1, 1868. The Deutsche Bundesbahn shut down freight traffic between Kempen and Grefrath and passenger traffic between Kempen and Kaldenkirchen on April 30, 1983.
