The Fürth city forest, together with the Zirndorfer city forest and the Zirndorfer forest, was declared a ban forest, as these forests “due to their location and their areal expansion in the agglomeration of the cities of Erlangen, Fürth, Nuremberg and Schwabach are irreplaceable and their surface substance must therefore be preserved ”Because they“ are of exceptional importance for the climate, water balance and air purification.
The quarries in the Fürth city forest, which are distributed over the entire area, are a registered natural monument of the city of Fürth and a geotope designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (563A001 [2]). In the Stadtwald quarries, the castle sandstone was extracted as an important building material until the Middle Ages. A larger quarry area with an information board is located near the Rangau view above the Felsenkeller forest restaurant.
