The flood cannons, which are still located on the Blokzijl quay, are no longer in use. The cannons were once used to warn the population of impending high water and flooding by firing warning shots. However, on the night of February 4-5, 1825, the warning came too late for many, because a storm surge and stormy winds drove up the water and sea dikes broke all around.
