The Eseltal valley has been a dry valley since the Pleistocene, the youngest geological era before the present, which lasted from 2.6 million years ago to around 12,000 years ago. Until the 20th century, the Eselgraben in this valley occasionally carried water after heavy snowmelt, prolonged rainfall, or heavy rain.
