Batenburg Castle was once one of the most important and oldest castles in Gelderland. According to tradition, a former stone above the entrance gate should indicate that Batenburg Castle was built in 527 on the remains of a Roman temple. Near the castle was a well with medical, antipyretic water sold by the gatekeepers.

At the Batenburg ruins, we had a great conversation with Adriaan Strik, 92 years old, who, together with his wife Tinie 91, have been administrators for 63 years and supervise the ruin. What a wonderful man who can tell wonderful stories about the history of Batenburg
