The front of the town hall faces the Plaza Nueva. The back of the town hall faces the Plaza de San Francisco. These two facades have completely different architectural styles. Projected by Diego de Riaño, the work began in 1526, and the town hall was held for the first time in this new headquarters in 1556. For the new building, the Plaza de San Francisco was chosen, which was a central and commercial place, in front of the convent. that gave it its name and in front of the Audiencia. The works are started by Riaño, who was commissioned to carve a durable stone construction with facades to the "Plaza Mayor" in front of the disappeared convent of San Francisco. In the 19th century, after the demolition of the convent of San Francisco, a reform of the building was undertaken. Developed by Demetrio de los Ríos and Balbino Marrón, it directs the new main façade to the Plaza Nueva, neoclassical in style. In turn, they reorganized the interior around two patios and a grand staircase.
