Legend has it that the Russian Tsar Peter I visited the shipbuilding workshop in Havelberg on his return journey from Holland in order to practice the skills he had acquired in Saardam. He is said to have carved the mermaid in a gable room of the old ship's tavern opposite the former shipyard, which later became Carl Wilhelm Backhaus' inn. A replica now hangs on the old "bakery".
