Thier is a district and one of the seven church villages of Wipperfürth in the Oberbergisches Kreis. The Kürtener Sülz flows northwest of the place. The Floßbach flows south and later flows into the Kürtener Sülz. In 2013 Thier became the national winner with gold in the competition Our village has chosen the future.

In 1443 the place was mentioned for the first time in a document: "Income and rights of the Cologne Apostelstiftes." The spelling of the first mention was Tire. In 1794 residents of Thier tried to move parts of the Lindlar parish, especially the Buchholz, Roderwiese and Oberbüschem farms, which are now part of the Süng parish, to make Thier a parish. This failed, however, as this "alarm and incitement" was forbidden by the sovereign after a complaint from the pastor of Lindlar.
