Here it is possible to observe these beautiful, powerful, but also shy animals up close. The first red deer in the Bocholt city forest was called "Caesar". They can live for 15-20 years. Every year in February/March the deer shed their antlers and soon after a new one grows back with more ends. A fully grown red deer has a shoulder height of up to 150 cm and weighs a maximum of 250 kg, making it the largest native (Germany) wild animal. The red deer gets its name from its reddish-brown summer fur. The fur is dark grey-brown so that the animals can camouflage themselves well in winter. The female animal is called a doe and the young animal is called a wild calf (f)/fawn (m) (up to 1 year) and a snub-nosed deer (f)/snub-nosed deer (m) (in its 2nd year).
