The Bocholter Aa has its origin in the western Münsterland, in the area of the Black Venn north of the Reken chalk sand mountains. It has a total length of 51 km and flows into the Oude IJssel across the German-Dutch border. The river has always been of great importance for the city of Bocholt and its development into an industrial city. The Königsmühle, for example, was first mentioned as early as 1366. At that time it was still a pure grain mill and was probably located on the southern edge of today's Aa lake. It was rebuilt in the 18th century, probably at its last location and expanded several times from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. In addition to its function as a grain mill, it later also served as a trowel and fulling mill, so it contributed to the flourishing of the textile industry. Source: lwl.org
