The Spilia Venetian Aqueduct
bridge is the largest construction of the Morosini Venetian Aqueduct, which supplied water to the city from the mountains from the 17th century until the early 20th century.
Francesco Morosini was the man behind the ambitious project of the 15 km long water supply, as till that time, Heraklion or Candia as it was known back then, was supplied with water from wells and water tanks that have been gathering rainwater.
The entire project was constructed in 14 months and was introduced on the day of Patron Saint Mark the 25th of April 1628.
