The valley of the Groot Schijn runs through the domain Vrieselhof. It is a tributary of the Scheldt that rises in Malle (Westmalle sub-municipality) in the area between the windmill and the Trappist abbey. The tidal effect of the Scheldt once had an influence as far as Schilde.
The name Schijn is probably of Celtic origin. In 1205 people spoke of Scint. That would be derived from Skinund, meaning 'the shining' or 'the shining', denoting the many floods that made the wet grounds shine in the sun. The place name of the municipality of Schilde is also derived from the river.
