The Wester Sugar Refinery once stood in this area. It was once the largest sugar factory in the Netherlands and was known for its sugar syrup. As early as 1919, the company became part of the Central Sugar Company (CSM). The office on Spaarndammerstraat was then abandoned, but the factory continued to function for many years. However, on November 1, 1965, the company closed its gates altogether. More than 250 workers were laid off, half of whom were able to work in the factory at Halfweg. The name Suikerplein still recalls the refinery, as does a small entrance gate on the Van Noordtkade that was designed in 1994 by artist Joke Overwater.
