Crevasse

The Wiel van Beneden‐Leeuwen is a “crevasse”, which was created before the dike of the Waal. A crevasse is the breakthrough of a river through its own levee. The dikes as we know them today started around the year 1300. Crevasses were dammed during the construction of the dikes. Over time, crevasses turned out to be a risk factor for the dike. They formed a sandy track in the dike subsurface that was sensitive to seepage and piping. With piping, water flows under a dike due to water level differences. This was probably partly the cause of the dike breach and flooding in 1861.
