The former Meynes - Montfrin train station is now a beautifully restored residential building. There is even a small piece of track left directly in front of the house and is part of the ensemble.
The station was on the old railway line that connected Alès to Beaucaire via Nimes. (Source: laterredargence.fr)
From the middle of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, Alès was the center of coal mining in the Gard, which boomed after the construction of the railway line. It was not until 1958 that coal production fell significantly again. The last mining site was closed in 1995. (Source: Wikipedia)
A wonderful cycle path has now been created on the old railway line between Beaucaire and Pont du Gard. The good infrastructure, with few intersections and fast asphalt and rest areas, allows cyclists to travel quickly from Beaucaire to the Roman aqueduct to Pont Du Gard. Unfortunately the route is very shadowless.
