The Castellet of Perpignan (also known as the Minor Castle or Castillet, a shape that reflects the local pronunciation and which has been adopted as a spelling in French) is one of the most important monuments in Perpignan, and its shape is used as a symbol of the Town Hall. It was alternately a city gate and a state prison. Today it houses the Catalan Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. It was also called Bastion or Bastille.

Only preserved city gate of Perpignan and landmark of the city. Was temporarily used as a prison.

Le Castillet, the former main gate of the fortifications, was built from 1368 and built under Louis XI.

The city’s most photographed sight is the tough gatehouse that commanded the main entranceway to the city from the 1300s onwards.
The tower goes back to the Kingdom of Majorca and was built with bricks and marble and crowned with outsized decorative crenellations.
When Perpignan came under French control the Castillet was enlarged by Louis XI who added the tallest part, the turret capped by a cupola, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it was converted into a prison.
There’s a museum about Catalan folk traditions inside and you can go up the spiral stairway with 142 steps to see Perpignan from the terrace.

The Castillet or Castellet (in Catalan) is a monument in the city of Perpignan that was in turn the city gate and the state prison. Today it houses the Catalan Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions. It was also called at certain times Baluard or Bastilla.
