No other building characterizes the face around the Pfaffenteich like the extensive arsenal. Many Schwerin residents only knew the former grand ducal armory with its white exterior paint. But then an old painting was found in the treasure chambers of the State Museum, which showed the Tudor-style building in a soft orange - or rather a very strong ochre? The monument conservationists pricked up their ears. Was this what the arsenal looked like in the original? Or was it just the late evening sun in the realist painting that bathed the facade in this warm color? This case was never fully clarified. But what the heck: now the arsenal of court architect Demmler looks like it used to. Maybe.

When the residence was moved back from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837, the need for representative and functionally located barracks and storage for military technology and equipment arose. Georg Adolph Demmler led the construction of the arsenal and created a building in the style of Florentine palace architecture. It comprises two courtyards that are visually connected by a central projection with a tower structure and includes the military hospital on Wismarschen Strasse, which was built in 1828.

Over time, the building took on various functions. Until 1865, parts of the Grenadier Battalion were housed there; after the Second World War, it served as refugee accommodation and then various police institutions.

Since October 1990, the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior has been located in the arsenal. During renovation and reconstruction work between 1991 and 2005, the building was given a reddish coat of paint after restoration work.

The grand ducal armory, or arsenal, was built between 1840 and 1844 to plans by court architect Georg Adolf Demmler and is now home to the country's Ministry of the Interior.

The old arsenal, which now houses the Ministry of the Interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a pretty building and a great photo opportunity. It is located on a large basin, the Pfaffenteich, in the center of Schwerin.
