Picturesque castle ruins above the Main. One of the oldest Franconian cultural monuments between Spessart and Würzburg.

The Schönrain estate with considerable forest holdings originally belonged to the extensive Schaippach royal estate district. Through Emperor Otto Schönrain came to the Bishop of Würzburg. He bequeathed the estate to a Count of Sangerhausen in Thuringia. 1080 is mentioned as the first owner Ludwig der Springer von Sangerhausen. Ludwig murdered Count Friedrich III. von Sachsen and married his widow Adelheid. When he got sick, he asked to be allowed to set his "soul device" (donation for the salvation of the soul). His guilt also led Ludwig to donate the Schönrain estate to the abbot Wilhelm von Hirsau in Württemberg with the stipulation that a monastery should be built here.

The construction of the monastery began under Abbot Wilhelm and was largely completed in 1093 under his successor Abbot Gerhard. The patron saints were St. Maria and St. Johannes Ev. Schönrain was subordinate to the Hirsau Monastery in matters relating to the Order and to the Bishop of Würzburg in pastoral matters. Monks were vicars from Wiesenfeld. There and in Halsbach the monastery also had ample possessions.

Well-preserved verwünsch ruin right next to the Mainradwanderweg; The easiest way by direttissima from the tributary (Halsbach) to reach (about 100 vertical meters). Is also comfortable from Hofstetten (slowly increasing).
