The Northern Gate of The City / Hadrian's Gate
The gate that provides the main entrance to the city is named as "West Gate" because it is located in the west, in the frieze of the arched door with three entrances Roman standards (military pennants), weapons, mixed sea creatures, bull heads, genius carrying girland (angels) and amazon shields (perita) are depicted.
The inscription on the exterior of the door says, "For Emperor Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus: The grandson of the deified Nerva, the son of the defied Taunus the great priest, the tribunus for the 13th time, the consul for the third time, the colony for the father of the homeland, and Sabina Augusta the colony and on the Inside "C. Julius Asper Pansinianus, the mayor for the 5th time, majestic, has made it with his own money and adorned it."
The gate was built in honor of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 129 A.D. and was renovated in 212 AD as a triumphal arch.
