  • The cellar castle was first mentioned in 1227: Widukind I. von Wittgenstein and Battenberg received the cellar castle from Landgrave Heinrich Rasphe IV. The castle has been uninhabited since 1463, at times food was stored. Described as intact in the village hall book of the Upper Principality of Marburg in 1577. After the castle was abandoned in the following centuries, the basement castle was demolished. The valuable building material was used to build houses, walls and streets in Battenberg. The restored, 17 meter high castle hill tower, remains of the enclosing wall and the moat have been preserved.
