    Frequently Asked Questions

What types of walking trails are available at Kasteel Twickel, and what are their difficulty levels?

The Twickel estate offers a diverse network of walking trails, ranging from easy, flat paths suitable for leisurely strolls to more extensive routes through forests and heathlands. While most trails are generally considered easy to moderate, covering gently rolling fields and meadows, some paths may involve uneven terrain or longer distances. You'll find well-maintained paths suitable for various fitness levels, including specific routes like the 70-kilometer mountain bike route established in 2010, which can also be used for hiking in sections. The European walking route E11 (Marskramerpad) also passes through the estate's woods.

Are there specific walking routes at Kasteel Twickel that are suitable for families with young children or prams?

Yes, Kasteel Twickel is very family-friendly. Many of the estate's paths are well-maintained and relatively flat, making them suitable for families with young children and prams. The formal gardens and areas immediately surrounding the castle often feature paved or smooth gravel paths. For longer walks, look for routes that stick to wider, less rugged trails through the park and open fields. It's always a good idea to check a local map at the visitor center for the most suitable routes for prams.

Is Kasteel Twickel accessible for wheelchair users?

While the estate features many well-maintained paths, full wheelchair accessibility can vary. The main paths around the castle and through the formal gardens are generally more accessible. However, some of the wider estate trails, especially those through forests and heathlands, may have uneven surfaces, gravel, or natural obstacles. It's advisable to contact the estate directly or check with the visitor center upon arrival for specific information on the most accessible routes and facilities.

Where is the best place to park at Kasteel Twickel, and does it get crowded?

Ample parking is available at Kasteel Twickel. The main parking areas are typically located conveniently close to the castle and visitor facilities. While there is sufficient space, parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season (April to October), on weekends, or during special events. Arriving earlier in the day is recommended to secure a spot, particularly if visiting on a busy day.

How can I reach Kasteel Twickel using public transport?

Kasteel Twickel is conveniently accessible by public transport. Delden railway station is located approximately 700 meters south of the castle, making it a short and pleasant walk to the estate. From the station, you can follow signs or use a navigation app to guide you to the castle entrance. Check local train schedules for connections to Delden.

Are dogs allowed on the walking trails at Kasteel Twickel, and are there any specific rules?

However, it is crucial to keep dogs on a leash at all times to protect the local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Please also be mindful of cleaning up after your dog. Specific rules might apply in certain sensitive areas, so look out for signage.

What is the best time of year to visit Kasteel Twickel for walking, considering weather and crowds?

While the estate is beautiful year-round, the period from April to October is generally considered the best for walking, as the gardens are open and the weather is typically pleasant. However, this is also the busiest period. For fewer crowds and picturesque scenery, consider visiting in late autumn (October-November) when the foliage offers stunning colors, or in early spring (March-April) before the main tourist season begins. Winter walks can be serene, but some facilities might have reduced hours.

Are there any cafes or pubs on or near the Kasteel Twickel estate?

Yes, there are options for refreshments. The historic Orangery on the estate serves refreshments during the summer months. However, guided tours are offered on specific days of the year, particularly during August and during special 'castle days' in June and September. It's recommended to check the official Twickel Foundation website for exact dates and booking information if you wish to tour the interior.

What other historical buildings or attractions can be found on the Twickel estate besides the castle?
