The name Banisleve means "The legacy of Bannos" (leiba = legacy). The small town of Bansleben near Schöppenstedt is mentioned for the first time in a document dated October 18, 1121. In it, the Bishop of Halberstadt confirms the "Stiftskloster St. Laurentius zu Schöningen rights and property in place and area". The village only got its current name Bansleben in 1550.
