João Gonçalves Zarco (* around 1395 in Tomar; † between 1467 and 1472 probably in Funchal on Madeira) was a Portuguese navigator and, together with Tristão Vaz Teixeira, is considered to be the rediscoverer of Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago)

Zarco - that means - “the one-eyed one”. The sailor tried to get rid of his unpopular name. He called himself Jõao Gonçalves da Câmara. However, his contemporaries probably did not accept this name change.

And so he is still known today as Zarco.
