Since the beginning of the Reformation, Luther's teachings had also spread to Salzburg. Finally, in 1863, the foundation stone was laid for the Evangelical Christ Church on the banks of the Salzach.
The construction was financed by generous donations from the Protestant world. 370 prisoners who were held at Hohensalzburg Fortress during the Austro-Prussian war against Denmark helped build the church. In September 1867 it was festively inaugurated. The brick building on Elisabethkai was the first Protestant church in the province of Salzburg.
