With its modern architecture and ecological features, the Sohlstufe Lehen power plant stands out in the middle of the Salzburg metropolitan area. In 2010, the city's base level was due to be renovated. In coordination with the city of Salzburg, it was decided to build a run-of-river power plant a little further downstream.

The Lehen Salzach power plant in the north of the city of Salzburg was designed by Max Rieder and Erich Wagner. In 2014 it was awarded the European Concrete Construction Prize.
