El Cau (the Cave) is an open-air museum set in an old quarry in the El Ferriol countryside, near Elche. The brittle sandstone used to construct various buildings in Elche centuries ago was used to sculpt and capture numerous images and figures representative of the city of Elche. The creator of El Cau was Mariano Ros from Elche, who died in 2017 at the age of 91. He started sculpting when he retired and made reliefs, sculptures and engravings with some colleagues from 2000-2008.
