Together with the world-famous temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the courthouse is one of the few buildings in the world that has been incorporated into a national flag – the flag of St. Maarten features a miniature depiction of the courthouse. The courthouse was built in 1793. The plans were drawn by John Handleigh on behalf of Commander Rink. In the last renovation in 1966, the courthouse received its current form. This building houses the Court of Sint Maarten. Until its completion in 1793, Fort Amsterdam was the seat of government on the Dutch side of St. Maarten.
