Hiking Highlight
The sequoia trees (Sequoioideae) are a subfamily of the plant family of the Cypress family (Cupressaceae). This subfamily currently comprises only three monotypic genera, that is, they each consist of a living species. Fossil, however, are handed down numerous other species.
The giant sequoia trees Sequoiadendron giganteum of the genus Sequoiadendron are pyrophytes; Their thick, fibrous bark protects them from forest fires, which can often occur in the dry forests of Sierra Nevada in the western United States.
Since the middle of the 19th century, these trees have been cultivated in Central Europe as (rare) park trees, mostly in spacious English landscaped gardens.

I now know this one and several in Heidelberg. However, they are not as big in Europe as they are in North America.
