    This area of Annapolis Royal was initially known as Nme'juaqnek - the place of abundance in fish. The Mi'kmaq tribe, widespread in NS, came here to collect and fish.

    In the 1600s and 1700s, it was the center of early European colonization and settlement. The star-shaped fort is the remnant of a long line of military bases that were taken over first by the Scots, then by the French and finally by the British. Fort Anne is a four-bastion fort that was built around the port of Annapolis Royal, protect. The fort repelled all French attacks during the early stages of the King and George War. Now designated as the National Historic Site of Canada.
