On the opposite side of the river from today's town, the first (French) settlement in Canada, Fort Port Royal, was founded in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Dugua de Mons. Port Royal was a fortified trading post and not a purely military facility. After the fort was burned down by the British in 1613, Port Royal was rebuilt at its current location in the late 17th century. In 1710 the city was captured by the British and renamed Annapolis Royal in honor of Queen Anne. Until Halifax was founded in 1749, it was the capital of Nova Scotia. On November 29, 1892, the town was granted city rights.
