In 1936/37, on behalf of the Wehrmacht, the Reich Labor Service south of Westerland separated a 568-hectare mudflat area from the Wadden Sea with a five-kilometer-long dike. It was supposed to serve as an air base for sea pilots for the Luftwaffe - but it didn't come to that.
From 1962 the basin was extensively restored and a sea bird sanctuary was set up there, which was declared a European reserve in 1968.
Different biotopes such as meadows, swamps, water and sand areas developed over time.
You can spot many species of birds on a hike in the Raumer Basin.
