The "NSG Heisinger Aue" and the bird sanctuary "NSG Heisinger Bogen" are located in the southern conurbation of the city of Essen - a river floodplain of the Ruhr with jungle-like floodplain forest, old water bodies with reeds and small ponds that have been created by mountain subsidence. The large wet meadows are regularly flooded. This relieves pressure during floods and promotes the self-cleaning power of the Ruhr. 35 years ago in 1989, the area was declared a nature reserve as a refuge and resting place for migratory birds. It is even classified as a landscape area of European importance and therefore bears the label "FFH" which stands for F = Flora for plant life, F = Fauna for animal life, and H = Habitat for habitat. Such river floodplains, which are regularly flooded, have become very rare in Europe.Just a few steps away is the Baldeneysee, a dam on the Ruhr that was created in the 1930s. Here is the bird sanctuary "NSG Heisinger Bogen" (9.5 ha) with a colony of grey herons and great crested grebes. The birds can be easily observed from the footpath because they are used to people.FFH area Heisinger Aue © Grün und Gruga EssenFFH area Heisinger Aue © Grün und Gruga Essen
