Beautiful historical place where life pulsates in summer. In the cafés and restaurants around the statue - and King Christian the 9th (*1818 to 🪦1906) of Denmark watches over everyone.

From his high horse, King Christian IX, the founder of Esbjerg, looks across the market square towards the harbor.
After the lost war in 1864, the Danish Reichstag passed the Esbjerg Harbor Act in 1868, which Christian IX signed. The monument was erected in 1899 by Esbjerg citizens when the place received city rights. The inscription on the base reads “In honor of the city's founder, citizens of Esbjerg erected this monument”. You can also see the Danish imperial coat of arms in bronze with the king's motto: "With God for honor and justice". Christian IX is also called the “father-in-law of Europe”, as several of his children married into the European royal and princely houses.
Two of his daughters became Tsarina of Russia and Queen of England, respectively, and one son was elected King of Greece.
      The artist is Ludvig Brandstrup.
