At first glance, the church in the Waldkappel district of Friemen does not look like a typical place of worship. This may be because, although it was once a meeting place for church services, in times of war it was also used as a place of refuge for the village population during raids. This is what Pastor Jochen Sennhenn reports, pointing out the massive church tower in comparison to the nave. The thickness of the walls is also more reminiscent of a castle. "Typical for a fortified church," says the clergyman.

In relation to the nave, the tower appears much too bulky, and the window layout is also unusual. The village church of Friemen is more like a small castle. Indeed, this is a formerly well-fortified medieval church with loopholes, which the villagers used as a place of refuge. Until 1830 the church was surrounded by a moat. The larger windows in the nave were only installed later and those in the tower were enlarged. The framework was added in 1718.
