From this location, a terrace on the banks of the Ourthe, you have a beautiful view of Durbuy castle. An ideal place to enjoy the legendary impressive castle.
The current castle, which belongs to the d'Ursel family, was built around 1880 on the site where the Durbuy castle had always stood. The first reports in the texts go back to the 11th century. In the 13th century, Durbuy was part of a defense fortification in the north of the County of Luxembourg. The gates and ramparts of the castle disappeared in the 18th century when King Louis XIV had the city and castle dismantled in 1675 and 1689.
The old legendary castle is today only a shadow of a legend and appears to be passé for the occasional day tripper.
New legends have taken over Durbuy and embraced it financially.
Wout Bru (Chef Le Sanglier des Ardennes) enjoys his terrace while his cash register rings…
Wonderful vapors swirl down in the old meander of the Ourthe. People stick together in the narrow alleys to catch a glimpse of the gingerbread house Désirée Durbuy.
Roger Van Damme has taken up post at his fence and gradually allows sweet tooths into his 'Chocolate Factory'. In all this hustle and bustle, Marc Coucke (entrepreneur – multi-millionaire) tries to attract the flow of people to his tourist train with 'cookies'. Unfortunately, his honeyed talk is not for us. We leave the crumbs for what they are… = a passage from our 6 day Arduenna Experience, which can be found in my Komoot collection

Now just muse, on a couch with the background sounds of the babbling Ourthe, about the smallest city in the world with its narrow alleys and idyllic squares. This is Durbuy 2.0

There used to be a dam on the Ourthe at this location. It supplied the watercourse that ran around the island with the water that was then fed to the paddle wheels of the mill. The dam consisted of a structure with vertical wooden piles, which were filled with stones from the river. The present fountain shows a cross-section of the shape of the dam.

Nothing better than overlooking the commercial hustle and bustle of the tourist center, from the top of a hill...
