Melchiorre Delfico was born in Teramo in 1774 and died in Naples in 1835.

He was a philosopher, historian and politician. From his early youth he adhered to sensationalism and later to physiocratic theories.

In the decades before the end of the 18th century he spent his life between Teramo and Naples, working in administrative offices and representing a progressive perspective aimed at modernizing the old feudal structures.

During the Neapolitan Republic he was appointed municipal leader of Teramo, but due to the return of the Bourbons he was forced to flee the reaction.

He found refuge in San Marino, where during the years of his exile he wrote the “Historical Memoirs of the Republic of San Marino”, which were first printed in Milan in 1804 and represent the first documented history of the small state.

In San Marino he also worked on the works he published in 1808.

Returning to Naples in 1806, when Giuseppe Bonaparte ascended the throne and appointed him a member of the Council of State, he remained here until his death, but his thoughts returned several times to the peaks of the Titan, as testified by the letters addressed to his friends after his departure.
