Best Hikes to Altar Knotto

Tips

  • It is a huge and particular boulder balanced on the edge of the cliff, almost suspended in the void, over the Val d'Astico below. Due to its surprising and magical shape, as well as its position, it has always been the source of many legends.
Its name, which in Cimbrian means 'Old Stone', evokes ancient ceremonies linked to the Nordic deities: on this natural altar pagan rites would have been celebrated, with sacrifices and gifts. In ancient times it was believed that it was a sort of small Asgard (the City of the Gods of the North), where Thor, Odin and Freya resided, intent on watching over the Cimbrian people from above. It is nicknamed "the last pagan altar".
With the arrival of Christianity, the pagan sites were converted into Christian sites, and the Altar Knotto acquired the nickname of 'Scagno [stool] of the Devil': from this throne the demon dominated and controlled the valley below and the men!
Another legend says it is inhabited by the dwarf people, who hide their golden treasure there: if during the night, from the valley floor, you see sparkles around the altar, it is the dwarves who open their chests!
Together with two other large stones similar in shape and position, it makes up the 'magic triangle' that delimits and envelops the Asiago Plateau: the western vertex is precisely the Altar Knotto, above Rotzo, overlooking the Val d'Astico; the northern vertex is the Hanepos (Thor's Anvil), in the Marcesina plain, on the Valsugana; the eastern vertex is the Spitzknotto di Stoccaredo (the Third Altar), on the Val Franzèna. In addition to seeing it from above, you can descend via a short passage equipped between the rocks, a little hidden, only for expert hikers. Beautiful panorama of the Val d'Astico. ilserenissimoveneto.it/altar-knotto

  • It is a large boulder balanced on a rocky platform, in a very panoramic position. The platform is not easily reachable, you descend from a ravine on which metal brackets are positioned to help you proceed.
