The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Hirschberg. In 1278, a Rüdiger von Dietenhofen was named as administrator of Sandsee Castle. Count Gebhard von Hirschberg sold the castle to the Bishopric of Eichstätt in 1302. The complex served the Eichstätt (prince) bishops as an official and hunting lodge. Today, the castle is inhabited by Carl Friedrich Prince von Wrede (* 1942) and his wife Katharina Princess von Wrede (* November 10, 1945). It also houses Katharina von Wrede's Nova Silesia art workshop.
