The first documented mention of a Parrochianus de Condiz (pastor of Kunitz) dates back to 1239. By 1406, a vicarage of St. Martin already existed. In 1450, the chapel of Gleisburg (Kunitzburg) was transferred to the parish of Kunitz. In a 1491 document, Dietrich IV, Bishop of Naumburg, called on his subjects to donate to the church dedicated to St. Martin. In fires in 1480, 1540, and 1764, the church and the village burned down. After the fire of 1764, the newly built nave, a hall church with two galleries and a mansard roof, was not consecrated until St. Martin's Day in 1773. The church tower was built in 1858/59 based on a design by Carl Spittel.
