The whalers' monument is a reminder of the families who used to wait anxiously at home to see whether their father, son or brother would return from whaling. Often enough it was just a matter of waiting and not seeing you again.

"Walfänger" stands as a poignant monument dedicated to the whaling sailors, commemorating their courageous endeavors.

The term "Walfänger" itself translates to "whaler" in English, encapsulating the essence of the monument. It likely pays homage to the men who navigated treacherous waters, facing the elements to hunt and harvest whales. The monument, through its symbolic presence, acknowledges the contributions and sacrifices made by these sailors in the pursuit of their trade, shedding light on the historical significance of whaling in the maritime heritage of the area.

Statue of a whaler in a boat – Fangstmonument (Arctic Hunter). He is fighting rough seas while trying to spear a sea creature.
This monument was erected in memory of the whalers and fishermen who lost their lives in the Arctic Ocean. Tromsø Torget, by the harbour, was the main meeting place for the local sailors - it was where they started their dangerous journeys, some of which never returned. These people formed the basis of Tromsø and turned it into a growing and thriving city.
The idea for the monument was born in 1952. During that one winter, more than 100 men died at sea, 80 of them whalers.
Fangstmonument, made entirely of bronze, was created by Norwegian sculptor Sivert Donali (1931-2010) and was not officially unveiled until 1984.
