Braunau celebrated its 700th anniversary twice! The new town hall, built in 1902/03, stands in the front of the houses on the eastern town square. The old town hall above the Linz Gate was completely destroyed in the town fire of 1874, and with it the entire town archives. After the fire, the town hall's few offices were housed in the gate tower. As this was not a permanent solution, it was decided around 1900 to convert the five-storey Schrannen building into the new town hall together with the neighboring house acquired in 1898. The long-established construction company Anton Danna carried out the construction according to plans by the Salzburg architect Professor Schubauer.

At the end of June 1903, Emperor Franz Josef I, who was already 73 years old at the time, came to town for the ceremonial opening of this building.

Braunau also celebrated the town's 700th anniversary this year. Because this timing of the anniversary was clearly wrong, the big celebration was held again on the actual anniversary date in 1960, for which the then Federal President Dr. Adolf Schärf visited the city. Braunau is ahead of other cities in this respect, as it was "700 years old twice".
